Locations: Arco Academy, Camberwell
Duration: 1 year fixed-term contract with potential to extend
Working hours: 8:30 am – 4:00 pm, 5 days-a-week
Department/Group: English and Humanities
Level/Salary Range: £22,237.00  – £30,000

Situated in the heart of Camberwell, London, Arco Academy offers education to students referred by mainstream schools and the Local Authority. We have an enthesis in pastoral care and take a holistic approach towards education.

Job Description/ Role and Responsibilities :

Teaching and Learning

  • To implement and deliver an appropriately broad, balanced, relevant and differentiated curriculum for English to students age 11 – 16, and GCSE level
  • To monitor and support the overall progress and development of students
  • To facilitate and encourage a learning experience which provides students with the opportunity to achieve their potential
  • To contribute to the maximising of student attainment
  • To share and support the school’s responsibility to provide and monitor opportunities for personal and academic growth
  • To apply the Behaviour policy so that effective learning can take place
  • Any other reasonably requested duties


  • To assist in the development of appropriate schemes of work towards selected the English and Humanities syllabuses
  • To develop teaching resources and schemes of work
  • To contribute to the curriculum area and department’s development plan and its implementation
  • To ensure department documentation and practice concerning Health and Safety is in place and adhered to
  • To assist in the process of curriculum development to ensure the continued relevance to the needs of students, examining and awarding bodies and the school’s ethos
  • To ensure that the equipment is in good working order and suitable for teaching use

General Duties

  • To actively promote school policies and procedures
  • To work closely with the Welfare Officer and Safeguarding Lead as well as relevant staff to ensure the safety of all students
  • To work closely with the SENCO to review each student’s progress and development and decide on any changes to provision
  • To participate in relevant meetings with colleagues, parents and be involved in links with external agencies as part of curriculum enhancement, including extra-curricular activities and off-site visits
  • To support other members of the curriculum area and students as appropriate.
  • To complete daily reports on student progress and behavior
  • To review your own professional development and maintain professional standards.
  • To uphold and refer to the Teachers Standards
  • To carry out any other such duties as the post holder may reasonably be required to do
  • To be able to travel between sites

Candidate requirement:


Education / Training / Professional Qualifications

  • Passion for English and Humanities
  • Educated to a degree level

Skills and Ability

  • Highly organised
  • Excellent communication skills, including written and verbal interpersonal skills
  • Self-motivation, effective time management and the ability to work unsupervised
  • Good interpersonal skills
  • Good IT skills
  • Ability to inspire children and adults with enthusiasm for learning
  • Have the ability to think creatively and problem solve
  • Must be able to use initiative and work under pressure
  • Ability and willingness to learn new skills and methods
  • Ability to foster constructive relationships with, and gain the confidence of, young people, parents/carers and colleagues
  • The ability to work with individuals from diverse backgrounds
  • Willingness to support with Offsite visits as well as staff and student meetings.

Knowledge and Experience

  • At least 2 years’ of continuous teaching experience
  • Knowledge of best practice for teaching and learning
  • Up to date knowledge of current learning strategies
  • Professional understanding of the educational needs of at-risk students

Desirable qualifications include: 

Education / Training / Professional Qualifications

  • PGCE or recognised equivalent
  • First aid qualification

Knowledge and Experience

  • Ability to teach another subject
  • Knowledge of GDPR compliance
  • Experience using Bromcom system or similar
