Curriculum
“Unleashing students' potential through a meaningful, relatable, adaptable, and challenging curriculum, enabling them to learn and remember more.”
At Arco Academy, we understand that each student arrives with unique educational experiences and needs. We tailor our curriculum to meet the unique needs of each student, ensuring that all students, regardless of their provision or pathway, have access to a comprehensive and supportive education.
Our curriculum is designed to be adaptable, supportive, and challenging, ensuring that every student can thrive academically and personally.
Curriculum Intent
Arco offers students a safe and welcoming place to both study and grow as individuals. As a small school we offer an ambitious curriculum which matches the scope and breadth of the National Curriculum subjects while maintaining the learning environment that benefits our students.
In our Key Stage 3 curriculum Maths, English and Science take center stage. Currently we offer Biology as our main Science option. However, we are working on extending our science curriculum to cover Physics and Chemistry. Students have daily PE lessons using the wonderful facilities at Camberwell Leisure Centre including using the gym facilities and swimming pool.
Additionally, we have weekly lessons in History, RS, PSHE, and Personal Development focusing on aspirations and work-related goals. This year we have added a Creative element to the curriculum with a carousel of subjects including Art (Photography), Music, Citizenship, Modern Foreign Languages and Technology. The carousel has two lessons a week, with students studying each subject for 12 lessons before moving onto the next project. We also run an annual project with the Young Vic, which gives our students an opportunity to study Drama with theatre professionals.
Subjects are also enhanced by our range of enrichment activities – see our cultural capital calendar
In addition to the academic subjects that our student’s study, they have access to a suite of therapeutic sessions including Occupational Therapy (OT), Speech and Language Therapy (SALT), Counselling and Mentoring.
In KS4, students focus their studies on their options to sit GCSEs in 5 subjects. This is the minimum requirement for entry to many L3 courses (A levels, T levels, Vocational studies) and we want to give our students the best chance in moving forward after Arco and also choosing a path that takes them to employment.
Students study English Language, Maths, Biology, PE and RS. All students will also sit functional skills in English and Maths, these qualifications are often accepted by colleges in the place of English and Maths GCSEs depending on the course you apply for. Students will be taught all their option subjects at an appropriate level for them and will be entered into the appropriate exam where we know they can flourish.
There is also the opportunity of students to choice additional 2 GCSE options.
In KS4, students also have access to PSHE and Personal Development sessions each week, and still have access to the range of therapies available for our students.
